The Second Session of the Media and Climate Program

today,Wednesday, August 14, 2024, Arwa Al-Kaali held and presented the esteemed academic and journalist , the session was titled “Fact-Checking and Verifying Misleading Content and Fake News about the Environment and Climate Change.”

Academic Al-Kaali opened the session by reviewing the troubling reality of the flow of misleading information, the types of disinformation, and the resulting consequences.

She provided participants with the fundamentals and principles established for journalistic fact-checking both before and after publication, as practiced by the International Fact-Checking Network.

The session also covered how to monitor and scrutinize claims, enabling journalists to determine whether the information they possess is verifiable before proceeding with scientific and systematic fact-checking.

Additionally, specialized journalist in fact-checking, Hussam Al-Wakeel, enriched the session with his contribution, emphasizing the positive correlation between combating political disinformation and scientific information verification.

He outlined a series of tactics that politicians might use to mislead information related to environmental and climate issues, while the session featured lively discussions with a large number of trainees participating.

This session is the second in the Media and Climate Program organized by the National Forum for Environment and Sustainable Development (NFESD) in collaboration with the Humanitarian Journalism Foundation and the Arab Network for Scientific Journalism.
